Dental Sensitivity

Dental sensitivity affects a large number of people. It is generally triggered by hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks. Under normal conditions, the dentin (the inner layer of the tooth) is covered by enamel and gums around the tooth. Over time, the enamel can wear down and the gums may recede, exposing the root of the tooth.

The dentin has a large number of microscopic pores (tubules) that extend from the outer surface of the tooth to the pulp at the center. When the dentin is exposed, the fluids within these tubules can be stimulated by temperature changes or certain foods, causing sensitivity. This exposure of the dentin can occur due to several factors, such as gum recession, acidic drinks (like sodas), bruxism, intense brushing, the use of abrasive toothpaste, fractured and/or decayed teeth.

Teeth whitening, orthodontic appliances, or deep restorations are also examples of causes for dental sensitivity. However, this symptom is usually temporary.

To eliminate or reduce this symptom, various procedures can be performed, either in-office or on an outpatient basis, depending on the cause. A consultation with a dentist is therefore essential. It may be necessary to adjust your brushing technique, use soft-bristled toothbrushes, and use a toothpaste designed to reduce sensitivity. In the office, we can also apply fluoride varnishes, perform restorations in areas where enamel has been lost, among other solutions… The most important step is to consult your dentist to determine the cause of the dental sensitivity and find the most suitable solution for each case.

Endodontics and devitalization are synonyms

Endodontics, Devitalization, Myths

Endodontics and devitalization are synonyms

  1. Devitalization is painful
    No.
According to a study published by the American Association of Endodontists, the fear comes more from what others tell us than from our own experience with the dentist. Decades ago, due to limited knowledge and technology, these treatments could indeed cause pain. Nowadays, it makes no sense to associate this type of treatment with pain. By combining the professional’s technical skill with modern equipment, endodontic treatment can be performed comfortably for the patient.
  2. Devitalized teeth darken
    No.
The darkening of teeth after devitalization is related to improper cleaning of the inside of the tooth. With the correct technique, the likelihood of tooth discoloration is almost nonexistent.
  3. Devitalization requires several appointments
    No.
This type of treatment can often be done in one or two appointments. After the treatment is completed, the tooth should be properly restored to prevent future complications.
  4. Devitalization weakens teeth
    No.
Some teeth need to be devitalized because they are already severely weakened. If the restorative treatment is not adequate, the tooth or the restoration may fracture.
  5. It’s better to extract than to devitalize
    No.
The best for your health is to preserve your natural teeth as much as possible, and sometimes devitalization is the last resort to keep them. When this is no longer possible, implants are the best substitute.

For all the reasons mentioned here, before making a decision about what to do when you need dental treatment, consult a specialist.

Cutting-Edge Technology – 3D Endodontics

  • We increasingly value our teeth, and in this sense, performing an intervention on a tooth requires making an accurate diagnosis.
  • For many years, dental clinics have had X-ray machines to complement the clinical exam, thereby establishing a more accurate diagnosis.
  • Despite their significant contribution, we recognize some limitations of conventional X-rays, such as:
  • Observing in 2D something that is 3D.
  • Possible distortion of the image depending on the angle.
  • Overlapping anatomical structures.
  • Difficult to reproduce.
  • In our clinic, we have the latest global technology in this field.
  • We can perform a Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scan, which eliminates all the disadvantages of conventional X-rays and allows us to make a correct diagnosis and establish a treatment plan that is much more precise and closer to the actual needs of the patient.
  • (Even if you’re not our patient, your dentist can request this exam to better establish the diagnosis of the issue affecting you.)

And after Endodontics?

And after Endodontics?

After completing the endodontic treatment (root canal), the tooth that has undergone this procedure must be restored in terms of its function, aesthetics, and resistance. Depending on the degree of destruction and the location of the tooth in question, there are different options for restoring it. Thus, we have:

Composite Resin Restoration

This type of restoration involves the application of a composite (filling material) to fill the existing cavity/cavities, thus restoring part of the resistance, aesthetics, and function.

Ideally, composites should be applied to teeth with small cavities (slightly damaged teeth) and preferably located in the anterior sector, as these are not areas of heavy masticatory load.

Indirect Restorations – Overlay

These are restorations performed in a laboratory and aim to effectively restore the strength and function of posterior teeth subjected to endodontic treatment.

With this type of restoration, the durability guarantee of the treatment is higher than when restored with conventional composite.
