What are the treatments for gum recession?
As mentioned in the previous article “So, what is gum recession?”, gum recession is a problem that develops gradually and, in addition to becoming aesthetically unpleasing, can also cause tooth sensitivity, among other complications, which, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss.
Regardless of the corrective surgical treatment, the treatment planning always requires controlling the etiology of gum recession in order to establish stability and gum health.
When possible, the treatment option for covering exposed roots with “new gum” is periodontal plastic surgery. Several surgical procedures are available for root coverage, including: rotational flaps, tunneling procedures, free gum grafts, and coronal advancement flaps, with or without the addition of connective tissue grafts (or other biomaterials). This last technique is widely cited in the literature and is considered the most viable and predictable option for root coverage, with highly satisfactory and stable long-term results.
